A new door is only as good as the opening it is set into. Fit, square, spring sizing, and seal decide how the door feels years from now — and they are all decided on installation day.
What an installation actually involves
- Measure the opening
Width, height, headroom, backroom, and sideroom all constrain what will fit and which hardware the door needs. Headroom in particular decides the track configuration.
- Choose construction
Material, insulation, and panel style, weighed against the garage's use and the weather it faces.
- Remove the old door safely
Existing spring tension has to be released in a controlled way before anything comes down. This is the step where a rushed install goes wrong.
- Set the new door square
Sections, tracks, and hardware installed plumb and level to the opening, not to whatever was there before.
- Size and wind new springs
Springs are matched to the new door's actual weight. Reusing the old springs on a different door is a mistake that shows up as an unbalanced door within weeks.
- Set the opener to the new door
Travel limits, force settings, and safety sensors recalibrated, then the whole system cycled and inspected.
Construction options
The most common choice. Available uninsulated through to multi-layer insulated construction, and the widest range of styles and finishes.
A polyurethane or polystyrene core between steel skins. Meaningfully quieter and more thermally stable — worth considering seriously on an attached garage or a finished space above.
The strongest visual character, and the highest maintenance. Composite carries much of the look with better dimensional stability.
Full-view sections for a contemporary elevation. Lighter than steel, and a very different privacy and insulation trade-off.

Common questions
Should I replace the door or repair the one I have?
Repair is usually the right answer for component failures — springs, cables, rollers, opener parts. Replacement earns its place when several sections are damaged, when the door is rusted or delaminating, when panels are no longer made for that model, or when you want insulation the current door cannot provide.
Does insulation matter in Colorado?
It matters more here than in milder climates, and for two reasons beyond heating. Front Range temperature swings are large and fast, and an uninsulated door transfers that straight into the garage — which is a problem if the space is used for anything, or if there is living space above it. Insulated doors are also noticeably quieter and structurally stiffer.
Can the existing springs, tracks, and opener be reused?
Tracks and springs generally should not be. Springs are sized to a specific door weight, and a new door is rarely the same weight as the one it replaces — reusing them produces an unbalanced door regardless of how well everything else is installed. The opener can often be kept if it is in good condition and rated for the new door's weight.
What is R-value on a garage door?
A measure of thermal resistance, where higher means more resistance to heat transfer. Treat it as a comparison tool between doors rather than an absolute promise: manufacturers measure it differently, and a door's real-world performance also depends on the perimeter seal and how square it sits in the opening.
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward single-door replacement is typically a same-day job. Openings that need structural or framing work, non-standard sizes, or custom-ordered doors take longer, and the lead time on the door itself is usually the longest part.
